Mashed Up: Playlist and Potatoes

I was trying to be super clever when coming up with a theme for my Thanksgiving morning spin class, but it’s hard to think of songs that relate to eating, turkey, and food comas. So I stretched it a liiitttlleeee far and came up with a Mashed Up ride… sort of like mashed potatoes.. but only playing mashups… like the music… get it? SO CLEVER. It should be noted that Meredith taught before me, and her theme was songs that made her thankful. At first, I found this extremely touching and sentimental. And then someone asked her why R. Kelly’s “Ignition” made her thankful, and she said “You know, it’s like you’re turning on the key to your stomach. Revving up for a big meal. Stick that key in the ignition!”.

And then I realized that my theme wasn’t so much of a stretch after all.

After class, I came home to put on big girl clothes and went out to a late lunch/early dinner with my boyfriend’s family at the Bristol Lounge. It was weird not being at home on Thanksgiving, but it was pretty nice to not have to clean up after. This place was swanky and the food was delicious. My only regret was that I couldn’t put on sweatpants before getting seconds.

Yes, there was a dessert buffet. My downfall. I did sample the goods, but I was pretty proud of myself for not being a TOTAL pig. I was definitely full after, but I didn’t stuff myself to the extent that I normally do at home. I guess not having the sweatpants turned out to be a good thing… After dinner, we took a stroll in the Public Gardens to burn off about 2 bites of our meal. It was so nice out, but homegirl is not used to walking in heels anymore…

That’s a weird picture of me. My hips look big. Those hips don’t lie, but I’m pretending they do! The rest of the weekend was spent with Tom’s family around the Boston area and down the Cape. I’m happy to be back on track and in my routine this week but am DREADING my upcoming sugar detox. Gahh!

How was everyone’s turkey days? Did you splurge or stay true to being healthy? Yes, I know it was almost a week ago. Just thought I’d let all the craziness die down before bombarding you again with Thanksgiving shiz :)

Playing Catch Up

It’s Wednesday. Last time we posted was on Friday. NBD. No but seriously, it is a big deal.  WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS WEEK/THIS YEAR/THIS MONTH?! Let’s recap on the weekend, shall we?

Jams
I didnt post my playlists on Friday, mostly because I was too busy oogling our CrossFit Hottie of the Week, but also because I was so swamped that I didn’t have time for new music last week and re-used some playlists. I did make a sweet Maroon 5/Rihanna mashup playlist for my Thursday night Reboot Advanced class. Such a fun ride. I usually play longer songs, but having a bunch of quick ones made for a fast paced class and it flew by.

Food
Definitely splurged big time this weekend. It was my boyfriend’s birthday, and we did it up big! I surprised him with a dinner at Mooo… a steakhouse we’ve been dying to try (and how amazing is that name?) Totally splurged on sides (parmesan crusted onion rings? truffled french fries? yup), cocktails, wine, and a big ass filet.

I even put on a big girl outfit and heels! Things got CRAZY. And I hate to disappoint all my Paleo peeps, but the weekend of splurging didn’t stop on Friday. Sunday night, the actual night of his birthday, we had a mexican FEAST at his mother’s house. Enchiladas, cheese for days, and birthday cake.

Vanilla cake, chocolate icing, and Rolo’s and Heath bars stuffed in between. If this isn’t the definition of Paleo food, then I don’t know what is.

On a totally unrelated note (PSYCH) I got hit with a stomach bug on Monday afternoon and was out of commission until last night. Although there is a bug going around my office, I’m sure my weekend of stuffing my face didn’t help either. I literally was on my couch for all of Monday afternoon and most of the day Tuesday. It was great to get some rest and reset my system, but I ended up teaching last night and this morning. I needed to sweat it out, and I get SO antsy sitting around, and there are only so many episodes of “Teen Mom” a girl can watch (don’t tell me I should have been more productive with my time.. you know you do the same thing when you have a sick day…!) I’m back on track today with eating clean and am feeling almost 100%. And my birthday isn’t until December, so I have no reason to eat cake until then :)

I’m trying out a few new workouts this week that I’m very excited about. Will be sure to post some recaps and reviews. Also- I have a huge burn mark on my arm from doing faux muscle ups at CrossFit last week. The straps kept hitting my arm a certain angle every time I’d go up, and I didn’t realize it was just casually ripping away a layer of my skin. Everyone now thinks that it’s some sort of hair straightening accident or cooking accident, but I want to let everyone know that I’m way too badass to spend my time in the kitchen or making myself look pretty. This is a motherf*ckin’ battle wound, bitches! From doing muscle ups! (no one has to know they were the ones from the ground…. shhhh)

Happy Humpday!

New Jams

Happy Monday! I totally checked out this weekend in terms of social media. It was pretty fantastic. I’ll be doing a weekend recap shortly (complete with a Paleo Fest!!) but had a request to post my playlist from Thursday night’s class so wanted to share some new, bombtastic jams with everyone to get you through the day

Oh yeah, look at those two explicit songs. Such a badass.

This is BY FAR my new favorite song. I can’t stop listening to it.

Such a good groove, and I get way too excited every time Tupac drops in. Jam on it!

Epic 90s Playlist

Last week, I posted about my Epic 80′s Playlist, and I decided to keep things rollin’ through the generations and got down and dirty with some sweet 90′s jams last night.

Jock Jams? Check. Tag Team & Eurythmics? Done and done. BSB? NBD. But by far, my two favorites were “Mambo No. 5″ and “Livin’ la Vida” Loca. I remember those two songs coming out the summer I was going into 5th grade, and I literally could not stop listening to them. I had both singles on CD (applauding my 9 year old self for realizing that it probably wasn’t worth my allowance to buy a full length Lou Bega or Ricky Martin album..) and would alternate between them on repeat. And I ALWAYS used to make my mom blast “Livin la Vida Loca” on my way to soccer practice. Got me so pumped. I was so cool. Naturally, I finished off class with LLVL, which got me as equally pumped as my 9 year old self. I am still so cool..?

Don’t even lie and tell me those didn’t get you pumped up. Don’t you lie to me!

I Wants to get Funked Up

I’ve been feelin’ the funk lately, in a good way. I’ve always been a fan of funk music, but was hesitant to incorporate it into my spin playlists. I generally play a solid mix of stuff, but primarily stick to electronic upbeat dance shiz. However, now that I’m more confident on the bike and don’t feel like I’m going to pass out while sprinting and instructing at the same time, I’ve been adding new genres into my repertoireclassic rock, boy bands (yup) pop, 70′s, disco, you name it. Definitely letting my true colors and eclectic taste in music coming through. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes it’s a very, very bad thing (“Macho Man” came on my shuffle the other day and I seriously debating playing it in class…)

Anyhoo. Funk. Bringin’ it. Funk tunes are awesome for booty tappin’ and jumps because the beats are so strong and fun to move around to. I encourage everyone to have a dance party on the bike. It usually results in me dancing and head bobbing by myself, but that’s besides the point. Here are a few gems that I used the past week.

Kiel- Project Blue Book- I have the pleasure of being friends with these awesome dudes. Do yourself a favor and buy their cd (shameless promotion right here) but you won’t regret it. This is the first song off their new cd, and the energy is ridiculous. I used it as a warmup on Sunday morning- alternated between sprints, jump sets of 4′s, and some gearing up in position 3. Everyone was definitely awake after that one.

Call Me Up- Chromeo- Chromeo makes many appearances in my rides. This song is made for arm pumps and pushups. So good.

Move On Up- Lettuce- This one gets ya movin’. Perfect for a flat road with sprint intervals. I probably threw some crunches and chest presses in there too because I can’t do the same thing for more than 30 seconds.

I Need More Love- Robert Randolph- Holy crap. I LOVE Robert Randolph. I’ve seen him a few times live and he and his band are so f-ing amazing. If you ever get a chance to go see him, do it. Make sure you wear comfy shoes and minimal clothing because you will be dancing your ass off and the funk will melt your skin off. This particular song was perfect for fast jumps.

Cosmic Slop- Funkadelic- I’ve had a weird obsession with this song for awhile. Like I’ll listen to it 8 times in a row and pretend that I play bass and walk around going “ba dum, da dum dum dum dum” and look really cool. I used this for a warmup the other day with a little climb and some jumps. Some serious head bopping and bumpin’ around occured. How can you not?!

Give Up The Funk- Parliament- Classic jam. Perfect tempo for arm weights at the end of a ride. 5:45 of nonstop weights. Owwwwww indeed!

If anyone has some other good funk jams, please share! What are your favorite songs to ride to?

Early Millennium Jams

So this was my playlist for my class last night. I’m not even embarrassed about it. It was kick ass. I legit got chills when Larger than Life came on, even though it was about 100 degrees in class and I was sweating balls. What’s wrong with me??

I feel like so many spin classes and workout classes only focus on today’s Top 40. Even though Top 40 music is very workout appropriate (much more so these days with David Guetta on every f-ing track) I think it’s more interesting and fun when instructors change it up and give you something unexpected. Would I want to listen to Jock Jams every day? No (who am I kidding, I listen to it on the REG) but hearing songs I haven’t heard in years get me amped up. Luckily, the class dug it. And I’m thinking I need to do a Boy Band Battle ride coming up sometime soon. Where do you guys find your music?

It’s been a hectic week, so apologies for the lack of posts! Get ready for some gems this weekend. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with some music prodigies for your listening pleasure.

As you can probably tell, I’m a little strung out right now, slaving away in Photoshop. If you’re in the Boston area, come check out my class tonight at Recycle Studio! I have a whole lotta energy to get out, and we’re going back another generation tonight. 80′s baby, 80′s!
