Paleo Bandwagon

Pretty accurate. Via Constantly Varied

Since going Paleo, it has been my goal to help my family see the benefits of the “diet” and eventually adopt the lifestyle for themselves.  At first, everyone thought it was just another fad that would last a couple of weeks. The idea of removing all grain from their diet sounded ludicrous…. “What?! You can’t eat Kashi?! But Kashi is SO healthy!”

Ahhh, the memories.

It seems that recently, Paleo has been BLOWING UP. Emily and I have both heard lots of stories about people slowly adapting to this lifestyle, and it’s pretty kick ass. We hope that people treat it as a way of life, and not just a diet. A few of our close friends/families have been getting into it, so we thought we would do some chronicling of their experiences, and even some guest posts! We love hearing people’s experiences, challenges  and achievements, so if you have a story you’d like to share, please give us a holler :)

As you all know, my parents finally jumped aboard the Paleo train in January. They were amazed by how great they felt and how much more energy they had. After the first week, they started noticing changes in their bodies. The weight they had been trying to lose began effortlessly falling off. Their clothes were fitting a little looser. Their stomachs began flattening out. They were totally hooked. My mom, who has always been technologically challenged, even started a Pintrest account to keep track of all her Paleo recipes. Cutie.

And today marks another milestone in my family’s Paleo quest. My sister, who used to be anti-Paleo, will begin her first 30 day Paleo challenge today. Proud sister right here! I feel like saying something along the lines of “look at you all grown up and removing toxins from your diet like a big girl!” However, since my sister is older than me, I don’t think it would go well. But regardless, I could not be more excited or happy for her. And, since my sister is a writer, I will ask (aka excessively annoy) her to write a guest post about her experience. Ya’ll stay tuned now!

In other exciting news, my sister’s husband took his first CrossFit class last night! When I asked him how it went, he responded “you have no idea how much I hate you right now”. So, I think it went great! We talked CrossFit for a while (which I love) and then he excused himself by saying he needed to “crawl to the couch and eat his dinner”. I love it.  It will only be a matter of time until he drinks the kool-aid…

Anyways, I’m sure all this news is not nearly as exciting to you as it is to me. So, thanks for letting me ramble! If you guys have any tips or tricks on getting people to see the benefits of Paleo, please share! I am still trying to work on my boyfriend, so any help is appreciated :)

About these ads

HTFU

I came across an acronym this morning that I absolutely love. My gym has a “secret” Facebook page that basically serves as a member forum. People post funny pictures, inspirational photos, rants and questions to other members. I started noticing that “HTFU” had been accompanying a lot of these posts. At first I thought they meant HSPU (hand stand push-ups) which I thought was kinda weird. But after googling it this morning, I realized it stood for Harden the F**ck Up.  And, I loved it.

Choosing to resist temptation by Hardening the F**ck Up is what living a healthy lifestyle is all about.  Sometimes it’s going to be suck and yes, you will have to make sacrifices. But no one said it was going to be easy.  Easy is swinging by the McDonalds drive-thru to get a burger and fries when you are too tired to cook. Easy is skipping a morning workout because your bed is too cozy to get out of. But, by committing to living a healthy lifestyle, you are giving a big ol’ FU to “easy”. You all want more and deserve more. Next time you are faced with temptation (a delicious plate of warm cookies, an offer to go get “wasted” with your friends or the desire to sleep in and push snooze), I want all of you to commit to HTFU.  You are too strong to give up and give in that easily. You deserve to live a stronger, longer and healthier life. The rest of your life starts today. Let’s all HTFU together.

Food for Thought

“If you have time to watch T.V, you have time to cook good food”

Typical view of what’s inside my bag: berries, Larabar, veggies, spaghetti squash and grain-free granola. Oh and a spin shoe, naturally.

I don’t remember where I heard this quote the other day, but it’s SO true and spot on. Obviously, one of the biggest things about being Paleo is preparing your own food. I spend at least 20 minutes each morning chopping, slicing, dicing, scooping and planning out my food for each day. I literally bring half of my fridge to work. The most common excuse I hear for people having poor diets, Paleo or not, is that they “don’t have time” to cook. I’m sorry, but that’s not a valid excuse. There are SO many easy, quick recipes out there that legit take less than a half an hour to cook. A HALF HOUR out of your night. Gonna miss Jersey Shore or Teen Mom 2? Boo frickin’ hoo. Instead of rotting brain cells and becoming a couch potato, why not spend those 30 minutes doing something beneficial for your body AND your brain? And, if you reeeally feel the need to see Jenelle get arrested one more time, or watch Snooki fall on her ass after making out with a “gorilla juicehead monkey” (MUST SEE TV!!!), turn on your DVR. In the end, what would you rather do.. improve your health and longevity, or catch Kim Kardashian’s mom go through heartbreaking, traumatic plastic surgery?

Sorry, I’m going on a little rant here, but really. I feel that if someone like me can learn how to cook, and find time to do it, anyone can. If I know I have a busier than normal week ahead of me, I’ll cook extras on the weekend. Why do you think I’m so obsessed with spaghetti squash? It’s stupid easy, makes like 10 portions, and you can vary it up any way you want. Don’t have time to the grocery store? Ever heard of a freezer? Stock it with chicken, steak, and soups so that you always have a backup if you don’t have time to run into a store (which, living in a city, isn’t a valid excuse since I pass 3 on my way home). Load up on Tupperware and spend an hour one night packaging food for the week if you know you’re going to be super busy the following nights. No matter how hectic your life is, you can ALWAYS find time to prepare healthy foods if you want to fully commit to a healthy lifestyle.
